Even the most patriotic of South Africans can agree that crime is certainly our most worrying and problematic issue. Crime stats were eventually released two weeks ago after months of pushing and prodding from the DA. The recently released crime stats showed that there were alarmingly big increases in criminal activities in areas where the related specialised units were shut down. Two examples of such are the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit (see below) and the South African Narcotics Bureau (SANAB). Since SANAB closed in 2004, drug-related crime has increased by 87%. So why were SANAB and other specialised units shut down? The answer to this is reflected in many areas of ANC governance. Instead of allowing room for specialisation that encourages expertise and quality, the ANC aim to centralise power and increase State control.
